Grayson Perry: Provincial Punk

Grayson Perry is now part of mainstream culture. The production of many of his artworks is documented through high-profile television programs. For instance, the Chris Huhne Vase was researched and made as part of the Channel 4 TV series Who Are You?, in which Perry explores different facets of British identity. The same themes, social concerns and anti-elitist spirit of creativity drive his work today. However, does his acceptance into the mainstream soften the ‘provincial punk’ ethos in his work? Or is this how it can flourish best, playfully crossing the boundaries between art and mainstream media? Perry is still gently teasing the art world with his populist approach and has found new, widely accessible forums to creatively explore identity, class, politics and culture in contemporary society.
