Turner Contemporary: Helen Frankenthaler

Turner Contemporary is a unique and elegant arts space located in Margate, England, a seaside town and place of special significance for the 19th-century British Romantic landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. Architect David Chipperfield’s minimalist museum campus, finished in 2011, looks out upon the same spectacular seascape and sky that Turner himself cherished. A catalyst for the town’s regeneration–a locus for both tourism and community engagement–the arts organization strives to be relevant and accessible to all. As an institution without a permanent collection, the Turner Contemporary opens its generously-sized galleries to a dynamic menu of exhibits and programming that shed fresh light on current visual arts practice and bridge the gap between the historical and contemporary.
