Peter De Wint (British, 1784-1849)
Haymaking, About 1815-1830
Oil on canvas
26 x 38 ¼ in. (66.1 x 97.2 cm)

De Wint specialized in watercolors, and his oil paintings were little known until after his death. He did not sign or date his pictures. His work presents a highly idealized image of the English landscape in the face of rapid industrialization. The critic John Ruskin wrote, ‘De Wint makes me feel as if I were walking in the fields.’
