Overture, usually defined as an orchestral introduction to a musical or play, is in fact a work from the latter part of Frankenthaler’s career.  The painting represents a culmination of her Abstract Expressionist roots merging with her Color Field legacy.  The artist uses the entire canvas and incorporates textures of bold, verdant greens to evoke an ambiguous, yet powerful imaginary landscape.
