John Constable (British, 1776-1837)
Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Ground, 1823
Oil on canvas
34 ½ x 44 in. (87.6 x 111.8 cm)

One of Constable’s few commissioned works, this was painted for his friend Dr John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury. The bishop and his daughter can be seen in the lower-left corner, surveying the Cathedral Precinct. The tree branches that frame the Cathedral echo its gothic arches and suggest a symbolic level of interpretation unusual in Constable’s landscapes.
