Samuel Marsden Brookes (American, 1816–1892)
Still Life With Snipe, 1868
Oil on canvas mounted on hardboard
17 ⅞ x 14 ¾ in. (45.4 x 37.5 cm)

Samuel Marsden Brookes was born in England and immigrated to Chicago with his family, eventually settling in California. The wilder landscape of the West suited his artistic practice perfectly. His oeuvre is comprised almost exclusively of still lifes of game and fish for which he became well-known and quite successful. His treatment of the details of the captured animals’ features is given serious attention and rendered with the utmost skill. The minute variegations of color in the underside of the birds’ wings are particularly delicate, and the formality of this composition, with its unbroken oval backboard, gives the subject a timeless quality.
