Victoria & Albert Museum:

Romance & Nostalgia: Constable, Turner and the British Countryside

Available on Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream, Oculus Go and Oculus Rift.

This Boulevard experience features seventeen landscape paintings, spanning the early to mid 19th-century, by some of the leading figures of British Romanticism, including John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. This selection of works is drawn from two permanent collection galleries at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Users can move around the gallery space and study any painting. A zoom feature for all paintings allows for close looking. A tablet offers extended written labels and information about the Victoria & Albert Museum. Audio narration is provided by Mark Evans, Senior Curator of Paintings.

A wooden 18th-century “showbox” in the center of the gallery serves as a 21st-century virtual riddle machine, prompting users to solve eight randomly-shuffled riddles that appear inside the contraption. To find answers, users must look closely at the paintings and their labels. As a reward for completing all eight riddles correctly, a three-dimensional model of Salisbury Cathedral appears – complete with additional information about the building, its history, and function. Salisbury Cathedral is even pictured in one of the Constable paintings!
